# Completing a location

> Check the required fields and mark a location complete when the work is done.

When a location is finished, you **mark it complete**. Log checks that the fields
your configuration requires on completion are filled before it closes the
location.

## Mark a location complete

From a location's records, choose **Mark location as complete**. Log runs a
check:

- If everything required is filled, the location is marked complete straight
  away.
- If anything is missing, Log shows you exactly what - grouped by table, with each
  missing field listed - and walks you through filling them.

## Working through missing fields

When fields are outstanding, start the completion run and Log steps you through
them one at a time. Fill each field and move on with **Next**; on the last one the
button becomes **Finish**. When you finish, the location is marked complete.

<Callout type="note" title="Required vs required on completion">
  Fields with a **red asterisk** are required to save a record at all. Fields with
  a **green asterisk** are **required on completion** - you can log past them in
  the field and supply them when you close the location. See
  [Fields and entry helpers](/log/logging-data/fields#required-fields).
</Callout>

## After completion

A completed location is marked **Closed**. You can still open it to review, and
reopen it if more work is needed.
