# Core concepts

> Projects, tables, locations, records, geology and what your access controls.

Connect shows the same structured data as the rest of GIMLabs, read-only. A few
concepts explain what you see.

## Project

A **project** is the site or investigation you have been given access to.
Everything in Connect belongs to a project; if you have more than one, switch
between them with the project switcher.

## Table

A **table** is a named block of data - *Location Details*, *Samples*, *In-situ
Tests*. The sidebar lists the project's tables, each with a record count, and you
read one at a time in the grid.

## Location

A **location** is a point of investigation - a borehole, trial pit or monitoring
point. Most data belongs to a location, and a location can be marked complete
(its **hole status**).

## Record

A **record** is one row of data - one location, one sample, one test. In Connect
records are **read-only**: you can view and export them, never change them.

## Geology

Some tables can show a **geology overlay** - the geological description for each
record's depth - when the project team has shared it.

## Your access

What you can see and do is set per contact by the project team: whether you can
**export**, see the **geology overlay** and **hole status**, view **media**, see
**empty tables** or only **complete locations**, and whether you see all tables or
**locations only**. This is why your Connect may differ from another contact's.
